Description: The location of stores offering groceries for sale is based on the City of Gaithersburg or Montgomery County addresses point feature classes. City staff first reviewed a list of grocery stores obtained from a Google internet search and phone book yellow page listing in 2014, as part of the 2009 Master Plan Environment Element. Staff then visited each grocery store in 2014 to determine whether the store was full service or not, by noting whether the store carried fresh meat, fresh fruits and vegetables, frozen foods, boxed and canned goods, and dairy products. An attribute was then coded to reflect the type of grocery store, and an associated "notes" field was populated with information about those stores that did not qualify as full service.Staff updated the data in 2020 by using City records (GIS Addresses FC, Energov permits), Google Maps and Streetview, and the SNAP list of providers from the USDA within 5 miles of Gaithersburg ( https://usda-fns.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=e1f3028b217344d78b324193b10375e4 ). In addition to full-service and limited-service grocery stores, staff added membership grocery stores, convenience stores, pharmacies (drug stores), and gas station stores.
